Why Regular Show is Amazing
Although this is a blog about films I had to write a little something about a show most people know, Regular Show. Despite it being in the name this show is far from regular with what happens but the beauty of it is that its through the life of two 23 year old friends who live pretty normal lives. Mordecai and Rigby are best friends who work at a park with their co workers/ best friends, muscle man, high five ghost, Skips, Pops, and their boss benson. Their life is pretty normal, they work a minimum wage job keeping a public park clean, they play video games and eat a bunch of food. Mordecai and Rigby are not your typical workers though, like many young adults they thread the line of right and wrong to try and make life a little easier in the process they usually summon a god or form of evil that they have to defeat. You're probaly wondering what makes this kids show so spectacular, the combination of great storytelling, quick episodes, simple animation and relatable content makes this show a masterpiece.
Storytelling
Regular Show leaves no stone unturned when it comes to their concepts for episodes. Every episode they end up battling a new out of this world character that seems to get more complex and almost silly as the show goes on. With all the chaos of a crazy charter the show still manages to follow a template that doesnt miss. They incorporate life lessons into every episode and we get a feeling that Mordecai and Rigbuy although young and dumb are learning with every mess up. There are three major lessons many people point out through the story telling, one is friendship is important, the second is things don't always turn out as expected and its fine, and lastly its never too late to start. With every challenge the group of frinds faces they learn a new life lesson through the storytelling and its really incredible.
Quick Episodes
Now I don't want to be misunderstood with this idea. I don't think the quick episodes are a benefit because it makes it easy to watch or I can finish a season in a night, although these things are true the quick episodes allow viewers to see a whole story and lesson unfold in just over ten minutes. There is no major plot build up with every episode or lengthy introduction of new villains, the chaotic format of chilling to fighting some out of this world villain is what keeps us coming back for more.
Simple Animation
People describe regular shows animation style as low-fi or basic. The animation was made traditionally with hand and paper which was then converted to digital formats. This may have been due to some limitations with animation but they stuck with this style as time went on. The show keeps things simple even in the craziest situations which allows us as viewers to never lose track of the message in the story. The simple style also adds a little bit of sentimental value, it makes you think back to all the great shows we used to watch on TV as kids.
Relatable LifestyleYou probably think I'm crazy saying that Mordecai and Rigby have a lifestyle that anyone can relate to if you have seen the show, I mean when has anyone ever said it's normal to fight death itself for your soul on a normal Wednesday afternoon. It's not the fighting with monsters that makes the show relatable, it's the life of two 23 year old kids that really don't know what they’re doing in their lifes. These two best friends live through experience and grow with every episode. Mordecai and Rigby play video games like to play pranks on people and work a normal job all things that a lot of us do. We see the two make major mistakes and learn from them, this show takes the lives of normal people and life challenges and teaches you how to overcome them one battle at a time.
I loved the rapid acceleration of the show, just because the episodes were short. I went back and re-watched the show over quarantine, and it still holds up! I thought it was just a kids show when I was in middle school watching it, but I still loved the stories as a senior in college.
ReplyDeleteI grew up watching Regular Show and even rewatched it a few times. The comedic timing and phrasing is so iconic which makes me laugh still all the time. That final episode really sent the show off and ending was really emotional. I do agree with that the storytelling is unmatched for animated show. I also felt that Regular Show got more relatable as I got older, especially the struggles Mordecai, Rigby, and Benson go through over the years. Top 3 favorite show for me all time.
