Marie Antoinette Review

Image
Directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman the 2006 film Marie Antoinette details the life of a young king and queen who were thrusted to power after the former king died. This film did so many things well and the final result is a great movie, it details the good the bad and the ugly. It shows the life of a young women in a world where women were used but not really appreciated fully. The film also does a great job of showing a steady downfall of a king and queen in power.  One aspect of this movie that made it great was the camera work. The picture above shows Marie Antoinette arriving to versailles, it gives us a shot of her reaction as well as all the on lookers reactions. We see some disproval reactions, blank faces and smiles. This shot was also followed by POV shots of her walking down a line of what seemed to be endless people. As a viewer it I was able to see and feel the excitement but also the pressure Marie would be under.  An...

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Image
I'll be the first to admit I was skeptical about this film. Its old its black and white and its silent, these are all things that would traditionally turn me away from a film. The film was released in Germany in the 1920's and was directed by Robert Wiene. It details the life of a man named Dr. Caligari and his assistant Cesare who show up to a town claiming they can see the future and who will die in the future. The story unfolds people die and a chase begins but there was a major plot twist where we discover that Francis, one of the main heros trying to find the killers, is actually a patient at the local psych ward. What I loved about the film was the silent aspect. The story line was hard to follow at times without any speaking but it opened my eyes films and genres I never would have explored. With the film being hard to understand at times this breakdown helped me follow the plot a little better. Originally I dove right into the movie but reading some background and wat...

Lois Weber

How does the story of Lois Weber's  Suspense  unfold? What is the story? 1.) The film  Suspense  is a thriller film that tells the story of a woman and her new born child who were at home when a suspected robber approached. The man wandered the house until he found a spare key under a door mat and he breaks in the house. While all of this is going down the woman had contacted her husband and let him know their family is in danger he rushed home as the man entered the home and got closer to his family. It was at the last second that the robber was stopped and the man saved his family. How does Weber use the camera to build suspense in   Suspense ? 2.) Weber used things like split screen to portray the emotions of multiple characters at once which helped build suspense. The use of split screen also made the climax of the interaction take longer which kept the viewers on the edge of their seat. We also likes the use of not zooming but walking towards the cam...

Rear Window

1.) Jeffries broke his leg when he was getting a picture of a car at a race but the car hit him.   2.) As a viewer we were only given the perspective of Jeffries. This allows us to only know as much as he knows so we are on the same journey as him. It also is one of the big reasons the movie is so suspenseful until the end.   3.) I don’t think so. I think part of Jeffries confidence to keep digging about the murder was the fact that he was confined to his room. He was able to play a huge role while never putting himself in danger. All the time he had also played a part in getting him interested in the murder as well.   4.) I think as a viewer we would be more likely to not think there was a murder because we would see all the steps Lars was taking to cover the murder and we’d slowly gain his trust.   5.) This movie does a good job of portraying the stereotypical norms of women in the 50’s. Jeffries is often bossy to Lisa and she plays right into it wanting the...

Introduction

"They fear him they don't love him", these were the words of a concerned father talking to his son who was falling into a world full of senseless violence. Chazz Palmintari wrote A Bronx Tale, a coming of age story that details the life of young boy growing up in Belmont a working class Italian American town in the bronx in the early 1960s. This movie was the first movie I ever remember loving.  It opened my mind and made me look at movies as a true art form that can display every emotion and feeling in seconds. My appreciation towards movies has only grown over the years as I discover more directors and actors or actresses that are able to make me feel one with the film. As for why I took this class, I really want to dive deeper into my own head and see what I am attracted to in the films. This class will make me look deeper and fully assess the emotions I feel when watching movies. Being an exercise science major I really have no plan of going into the film or entertai...
